The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel

In order to accommodate light rail coming in 2009, the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel must be retrofitted and upgraded for use by both rail and bus. This requires the tunnel to be closed for up to two years, as of September 24, 2005. The buses that ran in the tunnel are currently traveling on surface streets. $16 million dollars in project mitigation are underway to help keep downtown moving during the temporary closure. These include dedicating Third Avenue to buses during peak commute hours.
